Samuel Arnold

Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) was an English composer and organist. His mother is said to have been Princess Amelia (second daughter of George II).

He was engaged as composer to Covent Garden where he compiled several pastiche operas, including the popular The Maid of the Mill. Later he bought Marylebone Gardens where he produced a number of light comic operas. After a few years, the criminal activities of an employee at Marylebone lost Arnold most of his money, the Gardens were sold and Arnold was engaged as music director of the Little Theatre in the Haymarket. He also became organist at Chapel Royal and at Westminster Abbey, where he was eventually buried
